One Shot Workshop - Saturday, March 10
Sydney Film School has once again joined forces with the Australian Film Festival to coach budding film makers in the third annual One Shot Workshop, on Saturday March 10, 2012 to be held at Sydney Film School.
This theoretical and practical program, part of the 2012 Australian Film Festival, has been designed to give students the tools to create long shot films – a process of film creation without cuts or editing.
Sydney Film School director and feature filmmaker Ben Ferris will educate students on ‘one shot’ filming. The full day workshop will demonstrate how to integrate the one shot technique with narrative and dramatic aims and explore the challenges of devising and shooting in this style. Students will have the opportunity to create a ‘one shot’ film and discuss the effectiveness of the choices they have made.
“The one shot technique can be used as a dramatic device that experiments with time and space to build tension and a sense of nostalgia. Iconic film directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, Bela Tarr and Stanley Kubrick have all drawn on the long-take filmmaking style. Its high risk film making and can be extremely difficult. If one thing is out of place, you have to abandon the whole film,” said Mr Ferris.
An award winning director, Ben Ferris won the Grand Prix for his short film ‘Ascension’ at the 2004 Zagreb International One Take Film Festival and again for his one shot film ‘The Kitchen’ at the inaugural Akira Kurosawa Memorial Short Film Festival in Tokyo in 2005. His critically acclaimed debut feature film Penelope (the first Australian-Croatian co-production) premiered at the 4th One Take Film Festival in Zagreb Croatia in 2008 as the Opening Night Film. Penelope has since won the Van Gogh Award at 2010 Amsterdam Film Festival and has been released worldwide on DVD through Contemporary Arts Media.
Since the School’s establishment in 2004 student films have screened in more than 100 festivals worldwide, winning 34 awards. The challenging filming style secured Sydney Film School graduate Brian Lien the Grand Prix at the 2008 One Take Film Festival in Croatia for his SFS short 7.23. (to see 7.23 click here)
The Australian Film Festival is returning for its third year to showcase film, present awards and host a series of workshops that continue to develop Australia’s current and emerging creative talent.
“The one shot seminars are always such a hit with emerging Australian film makers, and for the third year in a row we hope to inspire and develop the talents of these new creative minds,” said Barry Watterson, Director of Australian Film Festival.
