Additional Costs:

We recommend that students have their own external hard drives to store their film & video projects on and that your data is backed up regularly.

This is also useful when you want to create a showreel of your work.

Because different computers have various connections for the external drive, we recommend the drive you buy has at least USB 2.0, Firewire 400 and Firewire 800 connections and cables, and optionally an eSATA connection and cable (newer laptops and computers have the faster eSATA connectors). The drive's capacity needs to be a minimum of 500Gigabytes, ideally 1Terrabyte. The speed of the drive needs to be at least 7200RPM.

Not all drives are suitable for editing. A cheaper drive may not be fast enough, or cope with being moved from computer to computer. The price of external hard drives varies depending on the brand, features and capacity. The cost for a good quality drive will be around $160 for the 500GB to around $350 for a 1TB drive.
